Time spread

This section is dedicated to demonstrating how quickly expressed commitments in our campaign to the idea of a world auxiliary language are spreading over time.

Although calculations are only based on those who have supplied information to this website, keeping track of and displaying such information here should be useful in encouraging us to see how quickly the idea is spreading (and how much longer it will take for the idea to reach a critical mass of support). If we only tell a few more individuals, the possibilities of the effects multiplying are great."

The available statistical information on this topic (for your encouragement) include the following (by country (#1-4) or by all in the world (#1-5)):

  1. Total number of current supporters in the world or country (and percentage of populations),
  2. Average number of supporters added to our campaign per day
  3. Actual Rate of spread of idea over time (per day but condensed to display on a multi-month scale; may need to have the scale adjust if the numbers or duration of the campaign start getting higher).
  4. Projection of how long it would take for the idea to spread to all the people of the country or world based on the average rate of spread already existing (figuring for about 6 billion people in the case of the world) [base time remaining on number of currently signed up supporters, but if possible also separately on number of expressed commitments of those supporters to tell others (expressed commitments also useful for knowing when to stop sending email reminders if their quota has already signed up (assuming the supporters wish to be reminded that they have commitments remaining))]
  5. Potential Rate of Spread if Number of People Each Person tells are Increased (two is really the minimum to be sufficiently effective)

5) Potential Rate of Spread if Number of People Each Person tells are Increased (two is really the minimum to be sufficiently effective)

What follows are some statistics to show how quickly the idea would spread throughout the world, depending on how many people each of us tells and how frequently we tell new people.

Spread Rate

In order to view how quickly the idea would spread if you commited to spread the idea to a given number of people (and asked them to do the same but by only requiring them to pass it on to two others once) (spacing each person you tell over a given time interval), here's how long it would take:

1 person (6 billion time intervals)
2 people (33 time intervals)
3 people (22 time intervals)
4 people (17 time intervals)
5 people (15 time intervals)
6 people (14 time intervals)
7 people (13 time intervals)
8 people (12 time intervals)
9 people (12 time intervals)
10 people (11 time intervals)

Notice from the above that if you yourself (or people you ask) are only willing to commit to passing on the idea to a small number of people, you will need to make sure that they pass the idea on to at least TWO others total (and have them ask others to pass on to at least TWO, ad infinitum), since the chain will move along VERY slowly if each person only tells one other person (though of course anything helps). If each person only tells one other person, then it will take as many time intervals as there are people.

However, if we ask people to pass the idea on to at least TWO others, as this campaign proposes, then, within a very short period of time (33 times over whatever average interval new people are told), the idea will cover the world. For example, let's say we ask people to tell two others by the end of this week (and ask them to tell another two and so on). Then it should only take 33 weeks to cover the world. Note: this calculation and campaign does not require each person to tell two others every week, but only to tell two others total within one time interval (preferably within a week or even faster) (assuming you find two who will indeed pass it on). Even if the AVERAGE time interval that people wait to tell another two is a whole year (instead of a week), then this idea should still cover the whole earth in 33 years (perhaps 34 if the population increases). However, we do not want to wait that long, and it should not be difficult to have (at least on average) a much shorter time interval. If we encourage others to do it within a week, the idea should spread within less than a year.

Of course, you can tell more people and encourage them to tell more if possible (but please ensure they do not feel overburdened such that they will fail to tell at least two others). For example, according to the chart above, if you told 4 people the idea within a one week period (and asked them to find four people within a one week period to tell another four who agreed, and so on), assuming all followed the chain, the idea would spread throughout the world within 17 weeks of time (about 4 months), assuming people were willing to take on this amount.

However, since higher expectations on our participants may mean fewer participants, we are really encouraging we emphasize the amount of 2 others (though people can do more). For numbers over 2, there is not that much of an increase in time saved anyhow (though on an individual level, every extra effort both in numbers and time helps, especially since we cannot be sure each chain will continue propagating to the end as we hope it will or that it will propagate as quickly as we hope).

Remember this is not a pyramid scheme which requires people to spend money or do so in an unsustainable manner. In the case of our campaign, a pyramid scheme can work because there is no spending money involved--you only have to tell people the idea. Everyone can participate (as well as benefit) and not lose out.

Note: if you pass on the idea through email via this website, we will be able to verify for you whether the idea has already been passed on to that email account--ensuring this campaign will not trouble your friends who may receive many emails if they are not sent through this site. We can also verify whether your friend has visited our site to express his opinion (or lack of opinion) on the campaign.
